A new trend for spring break is sticking with the sun, but adding … snow. A Minnesota vacation getaway doesn’t have to be for the whole week. Financial constraints and rising fuel costs make trips with a full tank the getaway of the day. Spring breakers join in and share the fuel costs for an outdoor adventure in the upper Midwest. It can be a group of girls, boys, couples or a family.

Pack your winter sports gear if you have it, if you don’t have it, there are plenty of rental facilities to help you prepare. There is nothing more exciting than a game in the snow and the views of snow-white landscapes in the clean, fresh air help us forget the stress of school and work. If you’ve never been to a true winter vacation, prepare to be amazed, most people return time and time again enjoying the great outdoors and the true northern experience.

These won’t be appearing on MTV any time soon, but using Minneapolis / Saint Paul as the hub, here are a couple of suggestions for alternative spring break. Lutsen, Minnesota – Head north to Duluth International Harbor on Lake Superior and make your first stop at Spirit Mountain to ride the new Timber Twister., A treetop ride on elevated mountain rails in a roller coaster. Continue along the North Shore past state parks with frozen waterfalls offering spectacular photo opportunities. Check in at Eagle Ridge Resort, with accommodations to get in and out of skiing at Moose Mountain. Papa Charlie’s books are renowned entertainment, and the charming city of Grand Marais makes for a great side trip.

Brainerd / Baxter, Minnesota Reserve a hotel suite with a water park to get closer to shopping in Baxter and Nisswa. There are some unique shops and boutiques, as well as excellent restaurants throughout the area. Christmas Point is easily worth a half day, with over 25,000 square feet of retail on three levels. Rest and satisfy your palate with lunch at the coffee bar. Crosby, the former capital of the Lake District, is worth a trip. With over ten antique stores on Crosby and Atkin Minnesota streets. And spa services can be obtained at several nearby resorts, downhill skiing at Ski Gull, or Nordic skiing on the 100+ mile Paul Bunyan Trail. If you are into snowmobiling, there are hundreds of miles of groomed trails, including the lighted trail at Gull Lake. There are a variety of accommodations available in the Brainerd / Baxter area, some with on-site restaurants.
