Approach your dog

You have the opportunity to take a vacation for two weeks, but unfortunately there is no one available to take care of your pet. Boarding can be a good experience for your pet if you have made the necessary preparations. Step number one is to check the shipping facility and make sure it is clean and does not smell.

Make a list of questions to ask staff, such as (1) Are all interns required to be up-to-date?
vaccines? (2) Are pets allowed quality time to play and take toilet breaks every day? (3) Can you get referrals from other inmates to see how they rate the facility?

Provide the establishment with your pet’s diet and information on any health conditions or behavior patterns that need to be addressed. If you prefer to follow your pet’s diet, you can prepack each meal and any treats to ensure that your pet receives the correct diet. Be sure to provide any medications your pet needs.

Leave information about your pet’s veterinary clinic in case of emergency. Provide another contact
person to authorize any emergency treatment if you cannot be reached for your pet to receive the necessary treatment it may need more quickly. Being prepared for any unforeseen emergency is always the best option.

When you have chosen the right accommodation, stay calm and happy when you leave your pet. There are no tearful goodbyes that can upset both you and your pet. Enjoy your vacation knowing that your pet is in good hands.
