AV Conferences Finding Mass Deployments

Audio and video conferencing segment revenues increased 15.2% during the 2009-10 fiscal year. The segment grew to Rs 265 crore from Rs 230 crore. Polycom maintained its top position with revenue of Rs 110 crore, recording a growth of 10%. Tandberg, which landed some big deals from government verticals, grew 25%. All the key players in this segment showed double-digit growth. Factors such as increased competition from open source audio and web conferencing technologies, high price pressure, and the need for highly sophisticated infrastructure are limiting growth.

Greater collaboration has become the key to business success in today’s globalized world. Given that 60% of communication is non-verbal and 30% of the cerebral cortex is dedicated to vision, 8% to touch, and 3% to auditory-rich media that allow the use of all these senses, you would acquire great importance.

Business conferences and decision-making options are critically dependent on the availability of information at the right time. In order to save time, business meetings are increasingly being held over telecommunication networks with the help of video conferencing. The drivers of this industry are many: decreasing costs of IP telephony, availability of broadband at low prices and the need for companies to reduce costs. Many other factors have combined to ensure the success of audio and video conferencing in India.

new innovations
Cisco recently acquired Tandberg and together they will provide customers with a complete portfolio of telepresence endpoints, infrastructure and cloud services. Together, Cisco and Tandberg hope to capture the collaboration market. The integration of the Tandberg portfolio with the existing Cisco TelePresence portfolio is intended to provide customers with access to a broader selection of products and an integrated Cisco TelePresence architecture for many solutions and rich end-user experiences. With Tandberg products and technologies, Cisco will offer an interoperable portfolio for face-to-face collaboration. The portfolio consists of three integrated product categories: endpoints, infrastructure, and telepresence cloud services (including related companies).

Polycom announced high-profile H.264 support to reduce the bandwidth requirement for high-definition (HD) telepresence and standard-definition (SD) video conferencing by up to 50%. This provides customers with the best video experience in the industry with half the substantial network bandwidth requirements of competing solutions, a benefit that will drive broader adoption and increased return on investment.

significant trends
Rich Media conferencing is a powerful tool that a business can use to achieve effective interactive collaboration. A company can invite a specialist or subject matter expert to a virtual meeting at short notice, regardless of the person’s geographic location. Sales reps can deliver more compelling online presentations and demos, complete with video footage and live demos of the apps or services they promote. While large enterprises can adopt a full suite of applications, SMBs can take advantage of specific features that fit their needs and budgets.
