Les Miserables (Film Review)

It started when Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) is released from 19 years in prison, Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe) jailed him for stealing a loaf of bread for his sister’s son. Bishop Myriel, a caring bishop, inspired him to renew his life. After how many years, he became mayor of a city and owned a factory. But he was still afraid of Javert who hunts him down and plans to bring him back to prison.

Fantine (Anne Hathaway) is one of her factory workers who was later fired in the movie by the factory foreman. To satisfy the needs of her daughter, little Cosette, she became a prostitute. Once, there is an abusive client, she protected herself but Javert arrested her. Jean Valjean is also there, he rescued Fantine when he recognized that she is one of his workers. Javert tries to stop him, but continues to take Fantine to the hospital. Before Fantine died, she revealed her true identity to a court. He promised Fantine that he would take care of their little daughter, Cosette.

Later, a group of revolutionaries rebel against the monarchy led by Enjolras (Aaron Tveit) after the death of General Lamarque, the only government official who has compassion for poor people. Then, Marius Pontemercy (Eddie Redmayne), one of the revolutionaries, meets Cosette (Amanda Seyfried) who turns into a beautiful young girl, and they fall in love. Marius enlists the help of one of his friends, Eponine (Samantha Barks) to find Cosette for him. When Marius finally found out where Cosette’s house was, they confessed their feelings for each other. After Eponine stopped her father from entering Cosette’s house, she screamed to give an alarm to Cosette and her father. Jean Valjean became alert, so he announced to Cosette that they should leave the house and move to England. Cosette wants to stay for Marius but could do nothing to stop her father. Before leaving home, Cosette decided to leave a letter to Marius but Eponine hides it, because the poor lady is in love with Marius.

During the funerary possession of General Lamorque, the revolutionaries began to build a barricade in Paris. Inspector Javert pretended to be on the side of the revolutionaries to spy on them, but later Gavroche (Daniel Huttlestone) said that Javert is one of the policemen. Then, the first battle between the revolutionaries and the soldiers arrived, Eponine sacrificed her life for Marius, she receives the bullet for the man she loves, before dying, she delivered Cosette’s letter. Gavroche went to Jean Valjean, who joins the revolutionaries to protect Marius. Jean Valjean, suggested to the revolutionaries that they kill Javert, but he only freed him and faked his death.

At dawn, the soldiers destroyed the barricade and killed the revolutionaries. Jean Valjean saved Marius, they escaped the barricade before the soldiers found them. Thenardier (Sacha Baron Cohen) arrives at the box, stealing Marius’s ring. Jean Valjean discovers that Javert is waiting for him, but decides to ignore the inspector for his threats and continue to take Marius to safety. Javert later commits suicide.

After Marius recovered from near death, he was traumatized by the death of his co-revolutionaries. Marius and Cosette plan to get married, but before that, Jean Valjean revealed his true identity to Marius, who promises never to tell Cosette. Later, Marius and Cosette get married but the Thénardiers came and tried to blackmail Marius, so Marius learned that Jean Valjean saved him from death. Then Marius forced Thenardier to tell him where Jean Valjean lives. Marius pulled his wife, Cosette, to accompany him to see Jean Valjean. Before Jean Valjean died, he saw Cosette and Marius again. And then the spirit of Fantine and Bishop Myriel guide him.
