New Puppy Thoughts, Costs, and Considerations

Everybody loves a puppy. When you see a puppy, isn’t the temptation to take it home strong? This is especially true for children because they only see the here and now; they don’t think about what will come next. However, there are adults who also fall into this category; they see the dog and “fall in love” and that’s it. They will take a new puppy home.

Just say “NO” to that little voice pulling your heart to bring that puppy home, or at least say “WAIT”.

Getting a puppy should be considered as carefully as adding a member to your family. Without careful consideration, you will find several unwanted surprises, like these:

1. New Puppy Training: Training a puppy doesn’t have to be difficult, it partly depends on the breed. However, it is work. It takes time and patience. Accidents will happen, so be prepared.

2. New Puppy Care: Puppies, like children, spend some time at the doctor. There are shots, physicals, and exams. In addition, there will also be preventive items such as a heartworm preventative and flea and tick treatments.

3. Food: they also have to eat. Table food is not the best option and good quality food can be expensive, especially depending on the size of the puppy.

4. Freedom – Puppies and dogs can absorb a lot of freedom. Depending on your dog, he will probably stop sleeping late on the weekends. Plus there’s the family getaway, are you planning to bring your furry friend? Otherwise, special arrangements will be necessary, and these can cost you a few dollars.

5. Exercise: It is not enough to let your dog run around the garden. Is the yard fenced? Otherwise, running in the yard is probably not an option. Not only is it physically important to take your dog for a walk, it is also important for his mental health.

6. Sickness – like people, dogs get sick too. Some people almost never have to take their dog to the vet’s office, but others are not so lucky. Visits, tests, and medications cost money and can be expensive.

Puppies are wonderful. A new puppy in your home can be a fantastic addition. It is documented how a dog can improve health and contribute to a longer life. That said, bringing a new puppy into your home and into your family is a serious decision that requires planning, thought, and consideration.
