You can start by choosing an enjoyable activity and doing it for 15 to 20 minutes several times a week. Starting at a moderate pace will result in less muscle soreness and you’ll be more likely to stick with your exercise program for longer.

Remember: It’s important to start at a steady, comfortable pace when you start. If you start out with a very intense exercise program, you probably won’t stick with it for very long. After a few weeks, you can increase the duration and frequency of your training and also your chances of losing weight with your exercise activities.

Set weight loss goals

To lose weight effectively, you need to exercise or move 5-6 days a week. The best way to accomplish this is to set goals. You should exercise 3 times a week to start. When you can do this without much effort, you can add a day to your routine. Take it easy at first, but always work toward your goal of moving more.

For example:

A short-term goal would be to exercise 15 minutes 3 times a week. Another short-term goal would be to increase your exercise time to 20 minutes and add one day to the number of times you exercise each week. The small steps you take along the way would be your short-term goals.

A long term goal would be to exercise 60 minutes a day for 5 days a week.

The advantage of working out at home is that you can avoid the crowds at your local gym, work out if the weather is bad outside, and you’ll have the flexibility to work out at any time of the day or night.

My equipment recommendations are treadmills, rowing machines, and exercise bikes. Never buy new. There are ALWAYS people selling quality used gear in your local paper or you can shop online on Craigslist. If you take your time, you can find a great deal on used equipment.
