Knowing Long Island

There is an island that extends east from New York City. Long Island, as they call it, stretches about 115 miles. The western end is where Brooklyn and Queens meet, which are part of New York City. When people talk about Long Island, they usually only mean Nassau and Suffolk counties. As you may have heard, the island is occupied by a little over three million people, but the number of people on the island is increasing due to the influx of visitors. The island has several places that attract tourists. Long Island’s luxury hotels guarantee good vacation spots for well-heeled visitors. Long Island is probably not the right place to go if you want to be thrifty.

The most developed parts of the island are in Nassau and the western parts of Suffolk. The population is also denser in these areas. The rest of Suffolk, on the other hand, has that typical country feel, where wineries, farms and beaches are common. However, these quiet places are where you can find summer houses and hotels.

Tourist destinations are spread throughout the island. Tourism is at its peak during the summer and fall. These are the seasons when one can get to see the beauty of the island. The winter months see a drop in visitor numbers, who generally find winter too cold. In addition to the harsh winters, the cost of traveling to and staying on Long Island keeps many potential tourists away. The Hamptons or the Gold Coast could strip you of your money in minutes. However, there are towns on the island where prices are friendly. But, in general, Long Island does not invite tourists on a tight budget.

Many people go to experience its beautiful beaches, such as those on the north and south coast. One can get to see the port cities on the North Shore-Port Jefferson, Stony Brook and Huntington Village. Restaurants and shops are scattered throughout these towns.

There are a number of things that tourists can do. They can board the Hampton Jitney for a day tour or visit the North Fork wine country. You can also visit the towns of Huntington or Great Neck and check out the little shops there. Those who want to see magnificent views of the bay should go to Port Washington.

Long Island is also famous for its wonderful museums. One of the popular museums is the Atlantis Marine World Aquarium, where you can appreciate the beauty of the marine ecosystem. Many tourists also visit what used to be President Theodore Roosevelt’s summer home: Sagamore Hill, which is now run by the National Park Service. Other museums include the Hicksville Gregory Museum, Cradle of Aviation, Garvies Point Museum and Preserve, Sands Point Preserve, Wantagh Museum, Village of Roslyn, and Sagtikos Manor.

Lodging in Long Island hotels is never a problem. There are many hotels and motels where you can stay. They are everywhere, and you can search for them on the Internet and make reservations online.

Keep in mind that Long Island is a huge place. Once you’re there, it doesn’t really look or feel like an island because you won’t see any water unless you get close to shore.
