3 easy ways to get your toddler to sleep in their own bed

There is nothing wrong with co-sleeping with your child, but there always comes a time when your child becomes too old to share a bed with their parents. Encouraging your child to sleep in his own bed also teaches him independence. Most especially, you can spend some much-needed quality time with your partner.

Try these 3 easy ways to get your toddler to sleep in their own bed:

take small steps

If you’ve been sleeping with your child since birth, the transition will be much more complicated. The key here is to take one step at a time. First, explain to your son why he needs to have his own room: that all children should sleep in his own bed.

If it’s hard for him to leave his room early on, tell him he can sleep there, but not in Mommy and Daddy’s bed. You can sleep on a mattress on the floor. Once he begins to feel more comfortable, you can move into his room and sleep with him in his bed for the first few nights (or until he feels comfortable).

When he wakes up in the middle of the night to go to your room, take his hand and calmly lead him back to his room, no matter how many times he does it.

Make sure his room is suitable for sleeping.

Create a soothing and relaxing environment where your child can feel comfortable sleeping. A comfortable environment will help her sleep and get rid of night terrors (if she has them).

Provide what makes you comfortable in your own room: do you sleep better with a night light or in complete darkness? Do you calm down with a white noise machine? If these are provided in your room, it will be easier for you to sleep in your own bed.

Create a fun nighttime routine

Another effective way to help your child sleep in his own bed is to encourage him to fall asleep. He creates a fun bedtime routine and sticks to it. He can start with a warm bath and then proceed to read his favorite books. Hold him for a while until he starts to feel sleepy. Then tuck him in, turn off the lights, and let him sleep alone.

Try these easy ways to get your toddler to sleep in his own room and you’ll soon see more good nights of sleep!
