A brief history of enchiladas

Mexican food lovers will definitely be aware of the enchilada. Today, they are not only available in purely Mexican restaurants, but are also found in restaurants that offer Tex-Mex specialties, diners, and also in many supermarkets.

An enchilada is a simple rolled corn tortilla with meat and cheese. It can also be topped with hot sauces or onions, sour cream, beans, guacamole, nacho cheese, etc. Similar to a taco, a wide variety of ingredients can be used to make an enchilada. It can be steak, fish, chicken and a variety of vegetables, cheeses, beans, etc. It is a very tasty and versatile dish.

Much evidence suggests that enchiladas came from the Mayans. The dish was first associated with Mexico in pre-Columbian times. There is evidence that enchiladas were tortillas with fish inside. The dish is closely related to papadzules, which is a popular Mayan dish that also comes from the Yucatan region. This dish has corn tortillas that are dipped in pumpkin seeds and rolled with chopped boiled egg, then covered in tomato sauce. It was a main food of the nobles and was served on special occasions.

When the Spanish conquistadors arrived in the Western Hemisphere, they observed the variety of foods consumed by the local population. Tortillas made with corn flatbread were known as tlaxcalli but were called tortillas by the Spanish conquistadors. Throughout the following centuries, Mexicans continued to enjoy the dish and the enchilada is found in many varieties of cookbooks dating back to the first Mexican cookbook called El Cocinero Mexicano or The Mexican Chef published in 1831.

The enchilada has been admired by many gourmets around the world. In addition to being flavorful, it is extremely adaptable and nutritious, making it a great serving item. Additionally, many Mexican immigrants brought their culture, including their food, to the United States. The enchilada and other admired foods are becoming more popular with their easy-to-prepare recipes. One can expect the enchilada to be seen in the neighborhood soon.
