Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari: which one should I choose?

Currently, in 2010, you have a variety of options regarding the browser with which you can browse the web. This article covers each of the top 5 browsers and offers a brief explanation of each.

Statistically, as of June 2010, you are more likely to see this article in the Firefox browser. Firefox now has about 46% of the market share with the dominance and monopoly of Internet Explorer, in all its various versions declining.

Internet Explorer was originally the default browser on any installation of a Windows operating system, causing most people to start and continue using the browser.

After some legal battles with the EU, Microsoft has been forced to give users of the Windows operating system the option to choose between the five most popular browsers. So which browser do you choose?

There are five main options, all with different applications, advantages, and disadvantages.

Mozilla Firefox:

For a user who likes to personalize their web experience, this is the browser for you. Firefox has a massive library of plugins and add-ons, with categories ranging from Appearance to Privacy and Security.

Although it is important to note that, compared to Chrome and Opera, Firefox slows down after adding many add-ons. However, with each new release, this is changing very quickly.

Chrome:

Renowned for being the fastest browser available with a simple and easy-to-use interface. The ability to add plugins (extensions) was recently implemented, as well as increased security for passwords.

However, many people are concerned about the amount of information they would give Google if they used a Google browser such as Gmail, Buzz, Maps, and Search.

Opera:

Unlike Google Chrome and Firefox, Opera comes ready with extras and add-ons already included, however it does not support extensions in the same way that the other two browsers above do.

However, many web programmers do not test websites in Opera, so in some cases, the web pages may not load correctly. Opera is still a good option for those who don’t want to waste time adding additional security or changing various settings.

Safari:

Safari, a browser primarily associated with Apple products, can be used on all platforms. Previously, Safari was not as competitive as Chrome, Firefox, or Opera in terms of security, speed, and customization. This has changed as of June of this year with the latest version.

Internet Explorer 8:

Internet Explorer pre-installed with all versions of the Windows operating system. Version 8 is a huge (and desperately needed) improvement over all previous iterations of the browser. Specifically in terms of speed and security. However, even with this improvement, IE8 is still far behind its competitors.

Which should I choose?

Personally, I choose Firefox simply for its security, customizable features, and add-ons, although Chrome is starting to grow on me, particularly with the integration of other Google products, making for a seamless web experience. It all depends on what you get from your browser. The most important thing to keep in mind, whatever browser you are using, be sure to update it regularly. With all the increased competition, newer, faster and more secure versions are being released almost constantly.
