The top three PS3 games of 2011

2011 has seen the physical manifestation of the PS3’s dominance over other consoles. This year it is poised to overtake the Xbox 360 in global sales since its launch in 2004.

Quite a setback. Many people at the time of its release questioned the wisdom of an expensive Blu-ray component, which has been one of the main features that set it apart from other consoles ever since.

The other feature that has secured its dominance is the rich library of video games available to its users and unsurprisingly, with the upcoming holiday period, that archive is about to be replenished with some great blockbuster games.

2011 has seen some truly innovative games hit our shelves.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

I must admit that I am a fan of fantasy and role-playing games. I first tried Myst, which I played on Mac about 20 years ago. Things have certainly gone at a pace since then.

This is part V of Bathsheba Softworks’ epic fantasy (The Elder Scrolls series). Skyrim brings a whole new dimension to role-playing. Incredible graphics transport you to a vast world where you get lost.

Picking up 200 years after the end of Elder Scrolls IV – Oblivion, Skyrim finds itself in the midst of a civil war.

You can play a character as your favorite species, either human or elf, and increase your strengths during the game. You can improve your skills in magic, alchemy or weapons. A marvelous game for any fan of fantasy RPGs.

The Ico Collection and Shadow of the Colossus

One of the most irritating things about the PS3 for any PlayStation fan is that it is not backwards compatible with any previous console game.

What a relief that these two games, ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, are appearing in a PS3 combo pack. Widely considered examples of epic storytelling, these two games are enhanced with HD, full 3D support, and 7.1 surround sound.

Many a teary-eyed PS2 user will wake up to this in their Christmas stocking on December 25th.

battlefield 3

DICE’s highly anticipated FPS release does not disappoint. In direct competition with Modern Warfare, it literally outclasses it.

Choose between Tehran, New York and Paris as the backdrop for your combat zone, add innovative technology powered by DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine and great co-op and multiplayer features and you have the ultimate wartime first-person shooter.
