A brief introduction to cricket

Cricket is a modern sport played between two teams. Each team has eleven players. The game is played on an oval or round shaped ground that has a 22-yard long rectangular field in the center. A team beats to score as many runs as possible. The other team stops the run flow by dismissing the batters. A run is scored when a batsman hits the ball with his bat, runs to the opposite end of the field, and touches the box there without being thrown out.

There are three game formats:

a) Test cricket

b) One day cricket

c) Twenty Twenty

The oldest form of cricket is Test Cricket. The game of cricket actually evolved with Test Cricket. Records show that the first Test match was played between Australia and England in the year 1876-77. The game of cricket has come a long way since then. The rules have changed a lot. A test match is played over a period of five days with each team batting and pitching twice. The maximum number of more that can be thrown in a day is 90, while there is no limit to the number of more that a single player can throw. Over 2,000 test matches have been played to date.

There are nine Test nations that are full members of the International Cricket Council, the international governing body for cricket. These members are Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies.

Overstop cricket was introduced to England in the year 1963. Internationally, the first overstop game was played in the year 1971. One game is played in one day. A bowler can bowl a maximum of 10 overs in a game. In 1975, a new tournament known as the World Cup was born. All the members of the International Cricket Council gathered in one place for a series of matches against each other. The winners of the tournament were called world champions.

The World Cup is played every four years. ICC has held 10 world cups to date. Australia became champions four times, the West Indies and India twice, while Pakistan and Sri Lanka once. The last world cup was held in 2011 and was won by India.

Twenty Twenty

The latest evolution in the game of cricket is twenty twenty. Here each team plays 20 overs and a bowler can play a maximum of four overs. The first twenty-twenty international match was played in 2005 between Australia and New Zealand. The first twenty twenty world cup was held in 2007. The tournament is played every two years and twenty twenty world champions are crowned. 20 international teams have played the game to date.

Even after 100 years of its existence, the popularity of the game continues to increase. More and more people are practicing this sport. It is second only to Football in terms of worldwide followers and will be posting a challenge for the top spot very soon.
