How to give a great video interview

Video marketing is a force that you cannot avoid. One of the best ways to use video as a field is to interview other experts and colleagues in your field. In fact, I bet you already have a ton of interviews under your belt.

If you can do a teleseminar interview over the phone, with a few tweaks, you can do a video interview.

  1. Make eye contact with your camera or with the interviewee. Eye contact is very important in real life, as well as on camera. It generates a feeling of trust. If you think of the camera as a real person in the room with you, you’ll have a much better relationship with your audience.
  2. Keep your energy high. The camera diffuses your energy, so you will need to exaggerate your facial and vocal expressions, as well as your gestures. If you think you’re being too exaggerated, you’re probably appearing on camera correctly.
  3. Focus on good posture. Remember that the camera lens has tunnel vision, so if you slouch, sway, or shake your head, your excess movement shows up as if you were a sloppy interviewer. Keep your torso up, chest up, and neck long.
  4. Use natural movements. Although you have to keep an eye on the camera, you don’t want to look like a frozen mannequin. Keep your hands visible at all times and use hand gestures to engage your interviewee and audience.
  5. Master the art of speaking in bytes of sound. A sound byte is a short little story describing what you are doing or trying to sell in 8-10 seconds. He always delivers in complete thought that goes straight to the point. Think of them as quotable statements. When you learn to speak in bytes of sound, you will be loved in the interviews you present and in the media.

Video interviews are just another delivery format for your amazing content. Do you remember how to get to Carnegie Hall? Practice practice practice. The more present, the better it will look on camera.

Inviting comments to your post helps you get a great score. It’s about welcoming people into your world as if they’re having a private moment with an expert… you.

Be a celebrity in your niche with hot content. Using videos on your website is another way to engage people by personally responding to anyone who views your topic. I love unraveling something complicated and putting it into a step-by-step process, which is why I’m drawn to the use of video. Standing out from the competition also gives you a step up.
