Laser Tattoo Removal FAQ: What is white frosting caused by laser tattoo removal?

Even though tattoos are more popular than ever, many people regret getting these permanent works of art on their bodies. Fortunately, the latest laser technology can now remove unwanted and unwanted tattoos with relative ease.

It’s natural to have some concerns about the side effects of laser tattoo removal, one of which concerns the white frosting that sometimes appears as a result of this treatment.

What is white icing?

Rapid local heating of skin pigment, leading to gas or plasma formation, causes the white frosting seen during and after laser treatment. Carbon dioxide is released as a result of laser penetration and surfaces in the upper layer of the skin, which resembles white icing.

In the vast majority of cases, this only lasts for 15 to 30 minutes after treatment. It is a temporary side effect, which is perfectly normal. The white frosting is always evident during the first treatment, but once the ink is removed in subsequent sessions, it won’t show up as much.

Is white icing good or bad?

It may not look great, but the white frosting you see during laser tattoo removal is a very good thing. This reaction indicates that the laser is effectively penetrating the ink. On top of that, it also shows that your body is reacting and healing quickly.

As soon as the laser hits your skin, it can go in several different directions. Some light paths will reflect off the skin, while others will penetrate the epidermis and dermis. However, we are interested in those that reach the ink particles, absorb into the skin and cause the formation of white frost.

Are there other side effects?

Although each person’s body will react differently to laser tattoo removal, some common side effects include:

Blisters – Yet another indication that the healing process has started, blisters are not a cause for concern and although they are tender, they take 3-14 days to clear up.

Scabs: About 8 to 72 hours after treatment, scabs may appear over the affected area. Removing or peeling them can increase the risk of scarring; so let them fall naturally.

Swelling: Your body’s natural defense system may kick in and cause some swelling after treatment. But this will soon go down and is not a cause for concern.

Discomfort – Most people will experience some discomfort, but this usually depends on the location of the tattoo. An urge to itch afterwards can also occur, but in general, our patients report that the sensation of the laser is the same as getting a tattoo in the first place.
