The noise of the RV water pump wakes me up!

The typical RV comes equipped with a mid-cost demand type water pump. These pumps were suitable for the RV water supply systems of a few years ago.

For various reasons, the water supply pipes have changed in recent years. The most popular pipe material is now “pex” type pipe. This material has advantages over the materials used for the last decade, but it comes with its own set of problems.

One is the stiffness of the pipe. It is much “harder” than previous tubes and tends to “chatter” more than ever. By “chatter” I mean it vibrates with the pulses of the water pump and creates vibrations against the floor, walls, and cavities within cabinet spaces. This can result in a very loud and disturbing “hammering” noise from the RV’s water system. One solution is to install a flexible braided hose on the inlet and outlet sides of the water pump. Allow enough length to include a loop in the hose so that the hose has room to move a little to absorb vibrations from the pump. Another possible solution is to install sections of foam insulation where the pex tubes come into contact with cabinets or walls. These come in 4 foot long tubular sections (available at your local building supply store) and can be cut to length with a utility knife.

Various “solutions” can be tried, but one of the best is the Flo-jet pump.

This pump does not have a pressure switch, so it does not create pulsations to hit the pipes against the walls. It has a sensor that controls the speed of the motor, depending on the demand, so that the water flow and pressure are constant. An added bonus is lower amperage draw at low water flow levels … a major factor for unconnected campers.

So … if you need a new water pump … or you just can’t take that hammering anymore, consider the Flojet water pump.
