The best cooking tips for vegetables

As someone who grows her own fruits and vegetables, my cooking methods are quite unique. The quality of food is essential for good health, so preparation must be made to protect the enzymes and flavonoids it contains. For starters, the way vegetables are harvested is important to ensure their goodness is preserved. How quickly they are eaten after harvest is also important.

When in the garden, most vegetables can be eaten and enjoyed raw. There is nothing more beautiful than a freshly harvested ear of corn. The sweet and tender flavor is enhanced by the abundant juice it contains. So why should you take this and cook it? The same can be said for tomato, peas, broad beans or even homegrown broccoli.

In the case of the latter, instead of picking the whole head, pick just a few flowers when needed. They can be cut or broken from the main stem as needed. Do not wash, but lightly microwave if necessary. No more than a minute alone or with other varieties, but always without water.

Silver beet can be harvested for the leaves as needed. One leaf is usually enough for me plus a kale leaf. Along with a few rounds of carrot or butternut squash, my dinner consists mostly of these beautiful produce.

Anyone can grow vegetables as they are the least demanding of all crops. As long as they have sunshine, an occasional feeding of kelp fertilizer, and plenty of water, there’s not much that can go wrong? Even in an apartment you can grow something, including essential herbs.

The best advice is not to overcook and it is better to dry it in a microwave. When boiled in water, the goodness goes down the drain when the liquid is filtered. Don’t make that mistake, but think of the wonderful gut health you can have by adding that extra fiber along with the other goodies in your meal.

Fruits and vegetables that are raw or only partially retain enzymes and will work in the intestine as they pass through it. This is like a huge cleansing bush that not only massages the colon, but gets into the crevices and rids it of anything that might otherwise stay there and cause a polyp or worse, cancer.

Healthy food should be treated with care and a healthy body will be the reward. Give it a try and see how quickly you see results.
